For most people insurance costs, whether it be auto, homeowner's, health, or life insurance are a big annual expense. Shop around to find the best coverage for what you need. Get quotes from at least three different companies. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Compare quotes of the same amounts of coverage and deductibles. Insurance is purchased to provide financial stability.

Use a financially stable insurer! Check a company's ratings at A.M. Best and Standard & Poor's. Check your state insurance department to see if there have been consumer complaints about the company.

Some insurance companies sell exclusively through their agencies. Others sell through independent agents who sell polices from a variety of insurance companies. And, some insurers sell directly to consumers over the phone or online. Get a quote from different types of insurance companies to compare prices.

Ask people you know for recommendations. Talk to people that have made claims and see if they still recommend their insurance company. Price is just one factor to consider when buying insurance. You want to make sure you have the coverage and service you need, if you have to make an insurance claim.
